If you’re an international student studying on an F-1 visa, you’ll need special work authorization to gain U.S.-based work experience—whether it’s an internship during your program or a full-time job after graduation.
CPT allows F-1 students to participate in off-campus internships or jobs that are an integral part of their academic program.
You must receive academic credit or program approval for the experience.
CPT must be authorized by your school’s international student office before you begin work.
You can only work for the specific employer and dates listed on your CPT authorization.
Part-time (≤20 hrs/week) CPT is common during semesters; full-time may be allowed during breaks.
OPT allows F-1 students to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months in a job directly related to their major.
You may apply for pre-completion OPT (during school) or post-completion OPT (after graduation).
STEM majors may be eligible for a 24-month extension (check your program code).
OPT requires approval from USCIS and can take several months to process—plan early!
You must not start work until you receive your EAD (Employment Authorization Document).
