Check out the descriptions of the upcoming semester's course offerings to see what fits your degree requirements and interests.
If you haven't already, make a copy of your Course Planner (LTXD, G4L, PhD). Fill in the planner with your potential courses for the upcoming semester and send to your advisor. Update your planner each semester to ensure your are on track for your target graduation date in terms of credits and degree requirements.
When you receive an emails from ALT Student Services telling you it's time to register for next semester, don't delay in getting clearance to register. (You can also check the NYU Academic Calendar for dates when registration opens.) Set up a meeting with your ECT faculty advisor to review your COURSE PLANNER and get CLEARED to register.
Note: Every student has an assigned an ECT faculty advisor to discuss their academic progress and get clearance to register (except first semester when that is taken care of through Student services). Even outside of registration periods, you're welcome to meet with your advisor whenever you have questions about anything from courses to your career path. If you aren't sure who your advisor is or have further questions, contact ALT Student Services altstudentservices@nyu.edu.
All ECT faculty can be reached via Slack or email. Please allow 1–2 business days for a response. If you haven’t heard back, feel free to follow up with your advisor again. If you still are unable to reach your advisor, please contact ALT Student Services at altstudentservices@nyu.edu.

You must obtain clearance from your faculty advisor before registering, however you can do this through a meeting or email or slack- whatever method you prefer (see list of advisors above). Albert will block you from registration (advisor hold) if you have not been cleared. Talk to your advisor or ALT student services (altstudentservices@nyu.edu) if you have any questions about clearance.
A J term course is an intensive course that happens over the Winter break (usually the first few weeks of the January semester).
If you are interested in registering for J-term, there is no advisor hold that needs to be lifted, however, we still recommend connecting with your advisor for guidance on what course may be best suited for you depending on where you are in your academic career.
Credit Load reminders:
For financial aid purposes, part-time graduate students who enroll in a total of 4.5 units in the January and Spring terms (e.g. 1.5 units in J-term plus 3 units in Spring term) will qualify for financial aid. Students who require full-time status for financial aid must enroll in a total of 9 units (e.g. 3 units in J-term plus 6 units in Spring term).
International students need to be at their typical academic full-time status (9-12 credits for Spring only); J-term courses will not count toward the Spring course load.
There is no additional student fee (just tuition) for J-term.
If you are an international student, you must be registered for a minimum of 9 units before the add/drop deadline (check academic calendar to check on when that is) in order to maintain your F-1 or J-1 visa status. When choosing courses, it is important to pay attention to the modality (in-person or online) of the section you are signing up for.
Students with F-1 visas are allowed to take one online course per semester toward their full-time course load, so if you are enrolled in a total of 9 credits, 3 of those can be from an online course. This translates to 2 in-person courses and 1 online course.
Students with J-1 visas are only allowed to take an online course if they already meet full-time status requirements with in-person or blended coursework. This means that if you are enrolled in 9 in-person credits you are allowed to take an additional online course. Your online course will not count towards your required 9 credits for full-time status, however, it will still count towards your degree
When registering for courses, please make sure one of the following applies to you:
You are registered for a minimum of 9 credits (unless you are registered for thesis and internship, see below). In addition, you must be registered for at least two in-person courses to maintain your visa. Please read the guidelines above. Current US immigration regulations now only allow only 1 online course or up to 3 credits of online coursework to count toward your full-time enrollment.
If you are registered for internship and/or thesis, you can take less than 9 credits if you have fill out a Full-Time Equivalency Form and submit this form to steinhardt-registration-and-advisement-group@nyu.edu.
If it is your LAST semester of study and you have less than 9 units to take, fill out the Part-Time Enrollment Permission Form.

If you have any questions or concerns, please schedule an online advising appointment with the Office of Global Services (OGS).
Note: In J term and Summer sessions, you can take any number of credits; you do NOT need to fill out the Full Time equivalence (FTE) form.
We have created sample course sequence options for reference.
For study abroad course offerings for J-term and Spring semester, please visit the Steinhardt's study abroad page and apply by the deadline (~mid-October for Spring semester).
Brightspace (brightspace.nyu.edu) is the learning management system (LMS) or platform that faculty and students use to track assignments and grades for each course. Only your registered current or past courses will show up on your Brightspace home page.
Work with our wonderful departmental student services team for questions related to: forms you need to fill out, FTE, holds, applying for graduation, academic and mental health and other support services.
