Internships are open to all LTXD & G4L and PhD students who have completed at least one semester in the program, and can devote 180-240 hours to the host organization’s needs. This equates to around two full days a week for 12-15 weeks and requires that you register for our 3 credit** ECT course (EDCT-GE 2197 Media Practicum: Field Internships).
Notes:
internships can be taken for less than 3 credits in some cases. Please consult with ECT internship coordinator.

The following process is for those students who wish to do a 3- credit ECT internship in which we will provide support to help you get a placement and also during the internship itself. You may do up to 2 ECT internships.
Finding an internship that matches your career interests, especially when you are new to the field, may seem daunting which is why the ECT program has designed an internship program that includes a hands-on personalized placement process, ongoing support as needed, peer cohort meeting opportunities with other students doing internships and a wide variety of internship placement sites.
Working closely with Chrissy Glaser, our Associate Director of Experiential Learning, you will have an opportunity to be placed into an internship that matches your interests.
Note: if you are looking for options to do internships on your own, without course credit, you can look through Handshake, Indeed or other search engines, or company / organization websites directly- many of which list internships!
STEP 1 : INITIATE THE INTERNSHIP PROCESS
If you are interested in doing a 3 credit ECT internship, read through these four steps below to familiarize yourself, then contact Chrissy Glaser, our Associate Director of Experiential Learning (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu) to discuss what placements interest you.
When you meet with Chrissy Glaser, please be prepared to share the following information to start the process:
the internship sites that you are interested in applying for (see step 2 below)
your resume
Note: All students are required to complete 1 semester in the program before starting an internship. If you are an international student, please note that for non-NYU internship, you are required to be in the US for two academic semesters before interning. Please read more about CPT requirements here.
STEP 2 : FINDING A PLACEMENT SITE
There are two ways to go about finding a 'for credit' internship placement:
Find your own placement site
If you find an internship at an organization you are interested in interning with, apply and wish to have the internship count as credit towards your degree, please reach out to Chrissy Glaser (Chrissyglaser@nyu.edu) so that she can confirm that the internship meets ECT internship requirements.
Work with Chrissy Glaser to find a placement at one of our pre-selected ECT INTERNSHIP LTXD & G4L placement sites
After reviewing the internship sites; send site(s) of interest to Chrissy Glaser (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu), along with your resume. Assuming internship position is still open, Chrissy will send an introductory email to the contact person at the internship site.
The contact person at the internship site will usually reach out to you via email to set up a time to speak with you about the internship. Sometimes there are multiple candidates for the same internship position, so please prepare well for this conversation and be prepared to share what you'd like to get our of the internship experience. This is also a chance for you to ask questions about what the internship will entail.
After this conversation, we recommend that you follow up with the contact person by sending a note of thanks and recapping your interest in the position as well as relevant work, academic or other experiences and skills you could contribute.
Internship opportunities will be posted every semester on the ECT slack channel and sent to all graduate students via email. Please try to apply for internships a few months before start of the next semester, ideally no later than the following dates*:
Fall Semester: August 15th
Spring Semester: January 6th
Summer Semester: May 6th
*Application timing notes for your consideration:
Some internships require hard deadlines for site specific onboarding, noted in descriptions.
When CPT is required, a student cannot begin the internship until after it is approved by OGS.
STEP 3: REGISTER
If you are selected for the internship, please let Chrissy Glaser know so that you can get a registration code. Once you have been given a registration code, you can register for the internship just like you register for any other course. The course details are:

"I find it really difficult to describe all the wonderful feelings I have about my internship experience with BrainPOP. I've learned so much in the time I was there, from working with awesome people to applying things I learned in my courses. The work environment/culture was also just so refreshingly positive and conducive to producing high quality work. I interned with them for the spring, and I am finishing up a continued summer internship with them right now. I'm currently scheduled to continue working for them part-time in the fall, so suffice to say it's definitely been a rewarding experience for me."
"Embodied cognition. Cognitive apprenticeship. Legitimate peripheral participation. Take one class in the DMDL/LTXD program and you'll know that having a place to contextualize and practice your learning makes that knowledge even more engrained and encoded into your mind. Having an internship not only de-theorizes the learning that you are taking part in, but also gives you a job title, real responsibilities, and job experience that you can include in resumes, portfolios, etc. In my job search, my internship experience and real life practice is far, far, far, far more important than any class I've taken, paper I've written, or project that I've done."
"The internship experience in Classroom, inc. gave me an opportunity to know how to come up with the game idea and implement it. The people in the organization were very nice to work with. I never felt I was doing a job, but instead felt I was learning, contributing and enjoying."
