Academic / ECT Internship Program / How it Works/ Process
Finding the right internship can feel overwhelming, which is why ECT offers a personalized placement process with hands-on support, peer cohort connections, and a wide range of sites.
You’ll work with Chrissy Glaser, Associate Director of Experiential Learning, to find an internship that fits your interests, and receive ongoing support from the ECT faculty coordinator and peers.
Looking for internships beyond our ECT internship partner list? You are encouraged to explore Handshake, Indeed, or company websites directly. Cross-listed internships are also available, and any you find on your own may be eligible for credit—contact Chrissy (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu) if you'd like to discuss your situation.
If you are interested in doing a 3 credit ECT internship, reach out to Chrissy Glaser, our Associate Director of Experiential Learning (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu) to discuss what placements interest you (make sure to go through the placements before you reach out).
When you meet with Chrissy Glaser, please be prepared to share the following information to start the process:
the internship sites that you are interested in applying for (see step 2 below)
your resume
Note: All students are required to complete 1 semester in the program before starting an internship. If you are an international student, please note that for non-NYU internship, you are required to be in the US for two academic semesters before interning. Please read more about CPT requirements here.
After reviewing the curren internship sites; send a few site(s) of interest to Chrissy Glaser (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu), along with your resume. Assuming the internship position is still open, Chrissy will send an introductory email to the contact person at the internship site.
The contact person at the internship site will usually reach out to you via email to set up a time to speak with you about the internship. Sometimes there are multiple candidates for the same internship position, so please prepare well for this conversation and be prepared to share what you'd like to get our of the internship experience. This is also a chance for you to ask questions about what the internship will entail.
After this conversation, we recommend that you follow up with the contact person by sending a note of thanks and recapping your interest in the position as well as relevant work, academic or other experiences and skills you could contribute.
Internship opportunities will be posted every semester on the ECT slack channel and sent to all ECT graduate students via email as well. Please try to apply for internships a few months before start of the next semester, ideally no later than the following dates for priority consideration*:
Fall Semester: August 15th
Spring Semester: January 6th
Summer Semester: May 6th
Note: Some internships require hard deadlines for site specific onboarding, noted in descriptions.
When CPT is required, a student cannot begin the internship until after it is approved by OGS.
If you are selected for the internship, please let Chrissy Glaser know so that she can get you a registration code. Once you have been given a registration code, you can register for the internship just like you register for any other course. The course details are:
